Auburn, WA — From July 27 to August 2, the Hawthorne Seventh-day Adventist Church Youth and Young Adult Group joined hundreds of worshippers at the Tongan SDA Camp Meeting in Auburn, Seattle. The annual gathering, known for its vibrant worship and fellowship, became an unforgettable experience for both the group and the wider community.

This year, Hawthorne youth also took part in Pathfinder Day activities, showcasing their talents in everything from fancy drill to Bible Sword. Several of the young people proudly brought home ribbons, a reflection of their dedication, teamwork, and commitment to both discipline and faith.

The Hawthorne youth and young adults were active contributors throughout the week. On Tuesday evening, they led the main program with a powerful presentation of music and a skit centered on the theme, “God says, ‘I See You.’” Their message resonated with attendees, highlighting the assurance that no one is unseen or forgotten by God.

Later in the week, the group returned to the stage on Thursday evening to share several musical items, once again uplifting the camp with their energy and faith. They also participated on Sabbath, offering music that enriched the spirit of worship.

A Moment of Crisis

In the midst of Thursday’s evening program, the unexpected occurred. Tanya BillyJean Taufa, a 16-year-old member of the group, suddenly experienced a seizure. The program came to an abrupt halt as concern swept across the congregation. Immediately, medical professionals who were present—nurses Mia Finau, Kolini Paea, and Dr. Kaloni Philipp—rushed to her side and administered life-saving care until paramedics arrived.

BillyJean was quickly transported by ambulance. Though groggy, she managed to whisper, “I don’t want to miss camp,” before drifting back to sleep. Doctors later determined the seizure was caused by exhaustion and dehydration.

Her parents, Helena and Faiva Taufa, expressed deep gratitude for the prayers of the camp community and for the quick response of the medical professionals who cared for their daughter. “She didn’t want to miss anything,” Helena shared, noting that BillyJean was discharged in time to rejoin the camp for the weekend. The family described the experience as both humbling and faith-affirming, emphasizing how much the camp meeting had blessed them despite the scare.

Faith and Fellowship

The incident, though frightening, became a reminder of God’s protection and the strength of community. For the Hawthorne youth and young adults, it was not only an opportunity to minister through music and drama but also a testament to unity in crisis.

As the camp meeting concluded, participants carried home more than just memories of programs and sermons. They left with renewed faith, a deeper sense of fellowship, and the assurance that God truly sees and cares for His people—even in moments of fear and uncertainty.
